About SOMEDI
SOMEDI – the Social Medical Service – was founded in Nettetal in 1981 by Dr Ramesh Modi. It all began very modestly: in his flat, Dr Modi and his wife collected boxes full of clothing and medicines to send to regions in need. Soon, this grew into a large relief effort that mobilised the entire village of Leuth.
Dr Modi became known as the ‘Indian doctor’ who not only treated patients but also built bridges between Germany and India.
A special event in the early years was Mother Teresa's visit to Leuth. She recognised the connection between her own social commitment and Dr. Modi's work, which confirmed the importance of the initiative in the long term.
In 1981, it officially became SOMEDI – Social Medical Service. Since then, the association has provided humanitarian aid in many countries, regardless of origin, religion or caste. Dr Modi's commitment was recognised at the highest level: he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his work.
Over the years, Stefan Voormanns also had a significant influence on the association. As its long-standing director, he is now the driving force behind SOMEDI's continued activity, promoting projects and implementing new initiatives.
On 6 September 2025, Dr Ramesh Modi passed away at the age of 88. With his passing, SOMEDI has lost not only its founder, but also a person who touched the lives of many with his tireless dedication and big heart. However, his commitment, humanity and vision live on – in SOMEDI's projects and in the values he exemplified: generosity, openness and the conviction that every human being has a right to dignity, education and medical care.
Today, the founder's grandchildren, Laetitia Zoe Honecker and Felix Amar Honecker, are continuing Dr. Modi's commitment and actively shaping the future of SOMEDI.
